Scandinavian Living Center

A welcoming place for everyone

Assisted Living

Long before the concept of Assisted Living evolved in the United States, the Scandinavian countries were highly respected in the field of support services for older adults. Their success is based on the belief that ‘age does not limit one's personhood.’

With this in mind, the Executive Director, Joseph Carella, traveled to Scandinavia in the mid-nineties on an extended study mission. The purpose of his trip was to identify the best features for the Scandinavian Living Center to use in building a successful Assisted Living residence.

The following ideas were incorporated into the Center:

  • Maintaining one’s ‘residential reality,’ i.e. having one’s own apartment furnished with one’s own possessions.
  • Maintaining one’s lifestyle and dignity, i.e. being self-sufficient but receiving assistance as needed with such tasks as personal care, medication and housekeeping..
  • Maintaining one’s autonomy, i.e. taking responsibility for oneself and one’s decisions. Maintaining active community involvement through socializing with others, pursuing hobbies and cultivating one’s interests..

The Scandinavian Living Center is an excellent choice for a new home with an efficient and caring support system. Privacy, comfort and security are found in one’s own apartment, and its unique setting and programs are designed to make living the best it can be.
